The corn germ is located at the base of the kernel. Its volume accounts for one-eighth to one-fourth of the corn kernel, and its weight accounts for 7.2% to 15.3, with an average of 11.2%. The fat content in corn germ is as high as 35% ~ 40, accounting for about 80% of the fat content of corn kernels; the protein content is about one-half of the fat content, and the nutritional content is rich. The extracted embryo can be used to squeeze oil, and then the protein from the embryo cake can be used as a nutritional fortifier, and the embryo cake can also be directly used as a high protein feed.
The germ base, also called the root crown, is located at the bottom of the grain and has no edible value. Because the embryo and the germ base are connected together, the germ base can be removed and mixed into the skin or embryo when peeling or degerming. The embryo is pressed together with the oil based on the embryo, which has no effect on the oil yield, but reducing the quality of the embryo cake will affect the quality of the protein extracted from the embryo cake.
